The history of Simi Valley tracks its evolution from an ancient settlement to a modern American suburb. The name "Simi" is derived from the Chumash word "Shimiyi," likely referring to the valley's distinctive cloud formations. The Chumash people lived here for millennia, leaving behind a rich legacy that includes the rock art at Burro Flats Painted Cave.

The Spanish colonial era began with one of California's largest land grants, the 113,000-acre Rancho Simi, awarded in 1795. For nearly a century, the valley was a vast cattle and sheep ranch. In the late 1880s, the land was sold to developers who established a colony, and for decades Simi Valley remained a quiet agricultural community known for its citrus and walnut groves.

The most significant change began after World War II with the 1947 opening of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, where rocket engines for the U.S. space program were tested. This facility, combined with the post-war housing boom, spurred massive suburban growth. To manage this expansion, residents voted to incorporate as the City of Simi Valley in 1969.

In the late 20th century, the city gained international recognition as the home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, which opened in 1991. The library has since become a major cultural landmark and a host for numerous national events.

Simi Valley offers a unique mix of presidential history, local heritage, and beautiful outdoor spaces. Here are some of the top activities and attractions to explore in the city:

Presidential History and Museums

  • Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum: This is Simi Valley's most famous attraction and a world-class museum. You can walk through a full-size replica of the Oval Office, step aboard the actual Air Force One Pavilion (SAM 27000), and view a piece of the Berlin Wall. The museum features extensive exhibits on President Reagan's life and career and hosts major traveling exhibitions. The hilltop location also offers stunning panoramic views of the valley.

  • Strathearn Historical Park and Museum: Step back in time to experience the life of Simi Valley's pioneers. This beautifully preserved park features original and historic buildings from the city's past, including the Strathearn House, a pioneer-era church, a one-room schoolhouse, and a library. It provides a fascinating look at the area's agricultural roots.

Outdoor Recreation

  • Rocky Peak Park & The Chumash Trail: For avid hikers, Rocky Peak offers one of the most challenging and rewarding trails in the area. The rugged, sandstone landscape provides a strenuous workout and spectacular views that stretch from the San Fernando Valley to the Pacific Ocean on a clear day. The Chumash Trail is another popular and scenic hike.

  • Corriganville Park: Once a bustling movie ranch where over 3,500 movies, TV shows, and commercials were filmed, Corriganville is now a public park. You can hike through the historic "Old West" film sets, see the concrete remnants of filming infrastructure, and enjoy the oak-studded landscape.

  • Tapo Canyon Park: A well-loved community park with playgrounds, sports fields, and access to hiking and equestrian trails that lead into the surrounding hills.

Family Fun and Entertainment

  • Skateboarding Hall of Fame and Museum: Located within the Simi Valley Town Center, this museum is a must-see for skateboarding enthusiasts, showcasing the history of the sport through a fantastic collection of boards, memorabilia, and photographs.

  • Simi Valley Town Center: An open-air shopping mall with a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and a movie theater, providing a central spot for shopping and dining.

  • Harley's Valley Bowl: A classic bowling alley offering fun for the whole family, with league play, open bowling, and an arcade.

Unique Attractions

  • Grandma Prisbrey's Bottle Village: A California State Historical Landmark, this quirky and fascinating folk art environment was created by Tressa "Grandma" Prisbrey starting in 1956. She built an entire "village" of structures made from bottles and other recycled items, creating a unique and whimsical display of creativity. (Note: Check for current tour availability as access can be limited).

Simi Valley's "vibe" is that of a classic, family-focused American suburb with a strong sense of community and a distinctly conservative, patriotic undertone. It's a place that values tradition, public safety, and a quiet, comfortable lifestyle.

The atmosphere is down-to-earth, unpretentious, and very centered around family life—think youth sports, community events at the park, and neighborhood block parties. For decades, it has been known as a quintessential "bedroom community," a peaceful place to raise a family with good schools and a reputation as one of the nation's safest cities.

The presence of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library imbues the city with a certain "shining city on a hill" ethos, reinforcing a sense of traditional American values. While it has all the necessary suburban amenities, it's not known for being trendy or having a bustling nightlife. Instead, its appeal lies in its predictability, security, and the wide-open feeling of its surrounding hills, offering a grounded and reassuring environment for its residents.
